Can I buy any type of grass seed of the plant?

I want to create an indoor plant little "garden". I've noticed that in places like the garden stores, seed packets of herbs are very cheap. Can I trust the seeds work? Should I get one of these "starter kits" or simply buy everything separately? What size of pots should I get? Thanks guys! Thanks!

The good thing is that teams are first, cheaper. pots that are 3-5, all the right size, some with peat pellets just water and expand. no need to buy land. and many have some kind of plastic cover that acts as a greenhouse for seed growth promotion. The only downside is to choose the types of herbs that will grow. if you like the idea of everything all in one, buy a kit. if you do not like their variety of herbs, you can always buy a pk or two of seed to replace theirs.

Made a great gift!

by Tuesday from Tri-cities, WA on 2010-08-24
I bought this for my father and step-mother as a gift to keep in the kitchen window of their new house. The herbs grew (and are still growing) plentifully and large with no extra additions, and it's always fun to go over and grab a home-cooked meal from time-to-time knowing that some of these are being included in my step-mother's wonderful cooking (yum yum!) I would like to buy one of these for myself when I have a good place to put it.

Great starter kit for beginners

by A. Grove from Philly, PA on 2010-03-28
I was very new to growing plants, especially from seed, but this kit is very easy and takes you through the basics of growing herbs from seeds. The seeds are very high in quality and include a huge variety and enough seeds for a couple of years. Great gift, too.

Fun starter kit!

by K. Hunt from Royal Oak, MI on 2009-06-18
I received this kit over a month ago. I followed the directions pretty closely, although I wouldn't call myself a green thumb. Everything sprouted but about half of the seedlings didn't make it in the long run. Certain plants seem more hardy: cilantro, mint, oregano, chives and basil all have since been transplanted and are doing well. This is a great, easy way to start herbs from seed and the tray is reusable. It also comes with more of the starter "pods" than will actually fit in the tray, so you can always try a second batch later after you have transplanted the first batch to larger containers.

As advertised

by Grete Salaz from on 2007-12-03
The kit arrived VERY quickly, and I got planting right away. The little peat pellets are a very clever way to start seedlings. I'll be using them more in the spring to start my regular garden. The instructions vary for each different type of seed, and most of my seeds sprouted quickly. There was one that didn't come up, but there is plenty of additional starter pellets and seed to do a second, and maybe even a third planting, so no worries. The little seedlings are growing every day! It's pretty fun ;-)

Very Cool Kit

by C. P. Garlitz from on 2007-11-23
The instructions are very thorough! Very cool kit, especially for the price. My first seeds are starting to sprout! Basil came up first. Can't wait to start cooking!

The planter is nice and looks great in my home but the herbs never grew. I followed the instructions with no results.

Beautiful

by K. Hunt from Boston, MA USA on 2010-04-07
I purchased these planters as a birthday gift and when I saw them in person, I was highly pleased. They are even more beautiful in person than they are online! They look expensive and are a lovely little set. The painting and shape of the planters was even and.. for lack of a better word, beautiful. Thoroughly pleased. The recipient was very pleased as well.

New universal grow pods are awful

by ecodon from on 2010-08-22
I have had several aerogardens over the last four years. I recently purchased two new 7 pod gardens (pro 100). Up to this time I was a satisfied customer albeit you have to either read up on what grows best or just practice a lot. Recently I received new universal grow pods that are supposed to fit in all the aerogarden models. Despite what customer service says they do not fit well in my 7 pod. Worse is that the new grow pods do not hold the grow medium near the top of the pod. The new universal pods promote mold and rot and discourage germination. Up to this point I would have highly recommended this product but not now or until they create a better grow pod.

Great idea, poor quality

by Sharon from on 2010-08-21
I've had my aerogarden for over a year. I get my seed pods in sets of six, and without fail, at least one either fails to germinate, or dies when it's very small. Aerogarden will send replacements, but it takes them up to 3 weeks (and some times it just doesn't happen), but by then the new plant is so far behind the original ones that it doesn't do well. The lights don't fit the sockets well, so I have to check and re-adjust them to be sure they are on. I think I had to request new nutrients every single time--the ones I received were crumbling and not effective. Last time I talked to a customer service rep, she said that my last kit must have been an old one, because they'd decided the solid nutrients (the kind I've been getting) weren't effective, and had switched to liquid nutrients. Apparently, however, there were kits packed with the old nutrients, and they just left them that way, and shipped them out. But, she said, I could call, and they'd send me the liquid nutrients. Sort of a sleazy approach, no? . I'd love to find something similar, even if it cost more, that was built to work.

aerogrow shipping is the worst!

by Laurie Larsen from on 2010-04-28
I ordered an Elite Aerogrow Garden on April 1, 2010. My credit card was immediately charged and here it is April 28th and still no Aerogrow! I have repeatedly called customer service and while the people are quite attentive I have yet to receive a shipping confirmation - no Aerogrow. I am told my product is sitting on a pallet in their shipping warehouse. My, my...An Extremely disappointed ex-customer

Love Fresh Produce

by N. Peters from Lake Orion, MI on 2010-04-18
Love my Aerogarden. Easy to set up and I now have herbs that will soon be ready to harvest. Would be especially good for an apartment dweller. Going to grow mixed lettuce when this crop is finished. Amazing how fast the herbs came up.

under rated

by M. Savilla from on 2010-04-10
This product rarely works unless you get the seed packs and immediately plant them...Very expensive, and maybe 50% of the time, you may or may not get anything to grow. I've had this for 3 years now and rarely had but a few things grow...Much easier to go to the garden shop and buy the plants and put them in your garden.I've had tons of their kits sent to me, and only half of them seem to work...I'll call customer service, and yes they will send more....but by then, the 3 that worked are growing big and you cannot start the new ones.Sorry to say, this product is for "rich people" who have the time time play. I'm only wanting to plant foods to eat and survive.

Grows fast

by M. Mehta from on 2010-08-27
Great garden. Grows really fast and is the perfect size to keep on an island or smallish table in the kitchen. Doesn't quite fit on the windowsill, but that doesn't matter since it has its own light. So far i've only grown the herbs that came with it, and i'm not sure what to do with thyme, but the fresh basil and the chives are wonderful to have.

Way overpriced, not so fantastic as it sounds

by E. Jacobsen from Boston, MA on 2010-05-03
This is severely overpriced, and produces limited results (and I am an avid gardener). It makes an annoying buzzing sound and produces a bright, harsh light, so much so that I keep mine covered with a dark towel when the plants are still small (when they get bigger the towel might hinder their growth). Don't buy it. Way, way, way overrated and hyped up. Get a pot of dirt and some seeds and go the old fashioned way.

Not So Great

by D. Bale from on 2010-04-06
I got this during an extreme discount on Amazon's Black Friday sales. I'd be pretty upset if I had payed the full price. Mine came with chives, thyme, and basil. The chives never sprouted. The thyme did not grow well, it stayed puny. The basil did great. Now, about four months into use, the automatic light timer is no longer accurate. It seems to turn on and off at random. I intend to unplug and clean it, then let it sit for a month and try some new seeds (peppers). Maybe it just can't take 4 straight months plugged in.

Disappointed in every way

by Eric Gross from Philadelphia Suburbs on 2010-03-31
I bought the AeroGarden for my wife for Xmas 2009. With considerable expectation we set it up to grow cherry tomatoes on about January 1 2010. The first thing we noticed was that, per other Amazon reviews, it makes a not so subtle buzzing noise. And the buzzing never stops. While it doesn't bother my wife, it has bothered me. I can't speak for our dog Shadow. The plant did grow with very little maintenance, but here we are exactly 3 months later and we have about 10 very small, still not fully ripe, cherry tomatoes. And they are still not ready to be picked, since they are still green. Meanwhile, the plant is not looking good. Hopefully, it will live long enough to yield something. My third and final complaint is that the tomatoes are really small with one exception - even for cherry tomatoes. I don't know what we've spent in electricity to keep this device buzzing annoyingly along, but whatever it is, it is too much. I can't yet report to how the tomatoes will actually taste and I'm not really sure if that would make any difference at all.

Great Gift

by ReaderRaven from D.C. Metro Area on 2010-03-13
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my 82-year-old Mom, and she's been enjoying it very much. The flowers are growing well and blooming, though one of them is not as robust as the others. She had some trouble getting the light/dark cycles set at first---the directions were not all that clear for this model---but we eventually figured out that she just needed to get up early in the morning, unplug it, and plug it back in to reset the timing. I like hearing her reports on her garden's progress, too (kind of the ideal low maintenance "pet" for her, really...), and will probably get her a set of herb pods to try next.

43% grew

by J. Couture from TN United States on 2010-09-03
We must have gotten old stock. It does have the sponge material instead of peat moss, it did not have the liquid nutrients and the tablets were falling apart, and now after 4-5 weeks, I have one very healthy basil and one very small thyme, and a small mint. So 3 out of 7 actually sprouted/grew. So now I get to call the company and ask for a replacement :(Update: 9/3/2010 I called and they are sending a replacement. They are strongly recommending distilled water so there will be no trace minerals ... will update on success/failure when it arrives.

Amazon must have an old batch

by Richard Krueger from Bellevue on 2010-08-08
Be warned: Amazon must have an old or bad batch of herb seeds. Only 4 of the 7 seed pods grew (the parsley, chives and dill never sprouted), and this is our second batch that had some fungus or mold in the purple basil pod. They have changed from the tablet nutrients to some liquid nutrients in a bag, two of which leaked (one was nearly empty and leaked all over the instruction booklet). The seed pods that did grow are growing wonderfully (more basil, mint and thyme that we can use), but it seems to be a shot in the dark whether you'll get a good batch.Based on the quality of this product, I cannot recommend purchasing it.

not the right size for my Aero Garden

by JJO from CA on 2010-08-01
I was disappointed in this kit. It says the seed pods and plastic holders will work with my Aero Garden but they are in fact too short to reach the water. I ended up removing the seed pods and putting them in the old, longer plastic holders and that worked. After I purchased this kit I bought the Master Gardeners deluxe kit which does not contain seeds. Just plastic holders, growing "sponges", and nutrient tabs. A much better choice as the parts actually work with my unit though I later found it would have been cheaper to buy it through the Aero Garden website (I purchased the Master Gardeners Deluxe kit directly from Amazon).

YAY! Sustainable garden on our counter

by David R. Greene from on 2010-07-18
So far we have grown herbs, lettuce, tomatoes... always easy. Cleaning is easy. Purchased a 3rd party nutrient system and things really took off. I find it optimal to add water every other day, or some pods don't get enough. Otherwise, slam dunk! Great product, great company.

Chili Peppers Seed Kit not very fruitful

by J. Offenbach from N VA on 2010-06-29
Today is June 29th and I began this adventure on March 1st, 4 months ago and the production expectancy for this set. The sprouting was slow, but the CS Rep from AeroGrow suggested I be patient. He said they would really take off once they sprouted. Well, they did and we were off to the races. So far, 1 mini jalapeno and 1 purple super hot have bit the dust completely. The second mini jalapeno grew huge but never produced a single pepper. Two of the purple super hots are still alive, but have never even produced a flower either. Both of the red fires are lush and have produced a total of 10 peppers so far. Considering the cost of electricity, the kit, the extra nutrients which needed to be purchased because there are not enough included, the replacement light kit, and the hours upon hours of talking to, touching, fertilizing by movement and a tiny hand held fan (CSR's suggestion) These are the most expensive peppers I've ever consumed. I'm thinking of transplanting these into my garden plot to see if they ever produce. I have one more seed kit (herbs) which I'm going to give a try and then I'm going to give up on this, and I'm not going to buy another set of bulbs even though it's advised. If you want alot of leaves which you do not consume, then this is the seed kit for you. I, on the other hand, wanted something to use in the kitchen.

Some herbs grow better than others

by E. Alter from on 2010-08-31
I love my Aerogarden. However, I found that some herbs like parsley and chives did not really grow at all. I am going for a second round of herb growing, and I am going to try putting the basil on the far side because it gets really big and blocks the light to other plants. The dill grew like a dream along with basil and thyme. The thyme is not the woody thyme that one would be used to, but a grassy kind (still good). Mint grew well but was very viney and had small leaves.

Great Product.. Even better concept...

by Hockeyman30 from on 2010-08-04
I bought this product a few weeks ago and right out of the box it had a bad bulb. I called aerogrow customer service and they shipped me out a new set of lights for free under the one year warranty. It took about a week to get because they did basic shipping but the good thing is that I had nothing growing at the time. The best thing to do is test the bulbs right out of the box before you plant so you know there is no problems. I also bought a backup set of lights ($14) and a backup pump ($9) just incase there is a problem with one of them. Even tho they will send you a new one for free, if you have plants growing and a bulb or pump fails they will prob die quickly by the time you get your free replacement. I have had my romaine salad kit growing for about about 2 weeks now and all 7 pods are flourishing! They showed signs of germanation in less than 24 hours and sprouts came out of the hole in the pod with in 48 hours. They do recomend that if you have hard water like I do, that you use distilled water instead. I keep the aerogarden in my room so I bought the new 24hr light cord ($9) on the aerogrow website. You need this cord inorder to set the lights by timer to go off the hours that I sleep and keep the reccomended amount of light on the plants, cause the unit does put out a lot of light when it is on. This cord controls the lights ONLY! You cant put a timer on the whole unit or the pump will stop and your plants might die from lack of water. The pump is vurtually SILENT! My fishtank is the only noise that can be heard in my room... thats how quiet the pump is! There is pretty much no maintanance to the machine except for adding water and nutrients which really does only take only about 5-10 min a month. All you have to do is prune on certain plants and clean the pump after every planting is finished. I love this product, so much even that I just bought a second one today! So over all this is a great hassle free product which is a lot of fun to watch grow and I couldnt be happier with the outcome. I just cant wait to try the finished product!

Love it!

by K. Levear from Tigard, OR USA on 2010-07-01
I got this so I could have tomatoes during the winter. I am practicing with the herbs until it will be time to plant the tomatoes. Everything sprouted on time. It's whisper quiet. My friends are jealous and want one, too. I was worried that I didn't buy a black one but there was no need to worry - this is very classy looking and it appears to be well made. Highly recommended for an indoor gardener.

I purchased two of these on Amazon and now I can grow tomatoes lettuce, green beans and much more Thank you Aero garden. It takes some work to learn how to use the system and Aero has a great help line for questions to be answered.. With the tomatoes and green beans I ordered the extension arm and and extra cord to get the garden and plants more room to grow..Great idea so I can not have to buy out of the grocery store. My lettuce always does great.

I'm a little disappointed that this costs so much for what you get, but I'll buy again just so that I can have organic lettuce whenever I want. I read on that you can make your own pods with whatever seeds you crave. I might try that when I buy a 2nd aerogarden.

Not really getting what you paid for

First - I love my Aerogarden. I had wanted one for ages, so when I found a 3-pod clearance one in a local store I was happy. I grew the flowers and they bloomed their little hearts out. I liked the idea of growing herbs and veggies inside, away from the critters that steal food out of the garden.I even bought a second unit - 6 pods - to grow herbs. And to reuse the 3-pod I bought the tomato seed set. Yes, I should have read the details of the description, so it's partly my responsibility, but...It says 6-pod seed kit. So I thought it would have 6 seed pods. Great - 3 for now and 3 for later.Wrong.There are 3 seed pods and 3 spacers. If I had realized that I would have looked more closely at the price and made a different selection. I didn't give 4 stars because I don't think the 3 pods is a good value for the price paid.Ignoring that - the seeds are growing happily in the 3-pod unit. They are only about 2 inches high so far, but they look healthy. Hopefully I will be harvesting cherry tomatoes in my kitchen soon.

only 4 of the 6 pods actually grew. the other two just molded. How old are these seeds?

Poor Growth

I have not been very happy with this product. The Basil is growing great but everything else has barely sprouted. I do think I will get much else other than the Basil.

It Works, the Basil is Best

by J. Keeler from Clarksville VA USA on 2010-08-31
This Aerogrow Aerogarden works as advertised and there are a couple things to consider when you decide to set up this item. For 12 hours the grow light will be on and it's pretty bright--even within the confines of the domed lid. It also gives off a little noise, nothing mechanical but more of a "trickle" sound from the water inside. The basil grew wonderfully, the thyme and chives grew but the thyme sprawled everywhere off to the sides and the chives were on the anemic side. I will use it for fresh basil outside the normal garden growing months. Here's a tip: start the Basil in the winter, then transplant it outside once it's consistently warm in your area. I started my Basil in January and was able to harvest it very early in the Spring, then I transplanted it outside where it grew immense and harvested leaves all summer from it. That plant is flowering in August and attracting hummingbirds.

I want to rate it higher!

I really want to rate this item higher! There is so much about it that I love, especially having fresh basil without having to fight the weeds and plant-eating bugs and snails.BUT, I have to say that 2 of 4 packets didn't sprout and considering the expense of those, it's very disappointing. If I knew how to reuse the little ones that didn't sprout, (I will eventually figure that part out, it can't be that difficult) I wouldn't be as bummed.Unfortunately one of the basil's is growing like crazy, one sprouted later and is overshadowed, and the 3rd herb I planted (one was parley, one I can't remember) didn't sprout at all, I tried two different ones. So I am kind of stuck with just one huge basil growing away, and can't really replant the unlucky front spot until it completes it's life. (I bought extra seed packets.)Still, I like my little machine. I will be more careful to make sure everything sprouts at about the same time NEXT time, or replace a dud sooner. The noise doesn't bother me, although others said it bothered them. Everything else about the machine has been reliable. Electricity bill hasn't gone up noticeably.I like the product quite a bit, but I just don't LOVE it. I am thinking I might like a bigger model, since the reviews there seem better. I do know that I don't want to have to buy the little pre-made seed pod things forever. Hopefully a bit of research will teach me how to make my own.Actually, had they included information about how to do that? My rating would have gone up to a 4 or possibly even a 5.

The name AeroGarden would tend to make one think this is an Aeroponic Gardening unit. Actually it is a hydroponic unit, since the plant grows into a continuous water environment. The setup is simple, and they do include a small air pump to keep the water oxygenated. The cover has an easy access panel built in, and the light works fine for the small indoor plants you may be growing here. Someone mentioned noise, but I found no noise problems, and simplicity of use allowed me to rate this 5 stars. I teach hydroponic/aeroponic/nft and other water planting systems. If you learn to add your own seeds and growing medium when replacing growing cycles, this can be a very inexpensive system to use. If you purchase the seed pods, it will cost you $20 per season, but simplicity is still there for you.
