Indoor Herb Garden Tricks to Sowing Seeds

There are a few indoor herb garden tricks to sowing seeds in flats, pots, boxes, milk cartons, cans or whatever you have handy. First the seeding mixture: whatever the container, a good seeding mix is two parts sterilized potting soil mixed with a little compost (use a little fertilizer mixed with peat moss if you don't have any compost), one part coarse sand, and a little lime (about 1 teaspoon for a 6-inch container).  Put a handful of pea gravel at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage, and fill each container with the seeding mix to within half an inch of the rim.

Sprinkle your seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly cover them with the soil mix. Now, punch a few holes in a piece of clear plastic and cover the containers to retain moisture.

For fine seed, moisten the soil and press the seeds down evenly with a small, board or brick. For larger seeds, create shallow depressions with the edge of a ruler and sow the seed thinly into the depressions. Press your seeds down with a board, cover lightly with your soil mix, and create your greenhouse with plastic.

If the soil dries out before germination begins, put the containers in water up to half their height until the soil mix is thoroughly moistened. The water will be drawn upward from the bottom and the seeds will not be disturbed. If the top still feels dry, mist the soil lightly.

Not generally known by beginning gardeners, seeds do not need light until they germinate -- that is unless you're using fluorescent or other lighting for warmth in which case the temperature should be kept between 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  When your seedlings break the soil, put them in a window with a southern or western exposure which will give them 5 to 6 hours of sunlight per day, and keep the temperature slightly cooler, about 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. If your plants start to look a bit anemic, they aren't getting enough sun. However, if you're using artificial fluorescent or incandescent light do not leave the lights on for more than 14 to 16 hours a day as most plants need a rest period, and darkness allows them to snooze.

The greatest hazard in growing seedlings is "damping-off." This fungus disease attacks the stems of the young plants right at the point where the plant breaks the soil. The result is that the stems rot and break off. The cause is too much moisture, so be vigilant and finger test your soil regularly.
