HID Lighting Basics - Why HID is better than incandescent lighting
The invention of high intensity discharge or HID lighting is an example that shows how far he has come from incandescent or fluorescent time they were created. To have a working incandescent bulb, electrical energy must be supplied to a tungsten filament inside the bulb so it heats enough to provide gloss and lighting. In other words, an incandescent light bulb is basically running on the electric energy supplied the tungsten filament. With continued use, however, the filament is burned and that is the end of the life of the incandescent bulb.
On the other hand, technology HID does not need a lamp filament to glow and give light, because the gases in the bulbs emit photons, which are responsible for the light that is emitted. HID lights are energy efficient because they do not actually run on electricity, but the photons emitted by these gases. Electricity will only serve to excite the gas inside the bulb to produce light. But to keep the light shining, the gas molecules are in charge. HID lamps have no filaments to burn, such as incandescent bulbs. This means HID takes way longer and burn much brighter. The combination of these, you can expect a significant reduction in power consumption, and significant savings on electricity bills.
Among the HID bulbs, there are three options for the consumer - mercury vapor, metal halide and high pressure sodium. The most efficient of these three is the high pressure sodium, which gives more of a light yellow, followed by metal halide, whose emission is much like light natural and mercury vapor, which is the least efficient of the three.
